Micronutrient Management in Corn Production: Key Elements for Maximizing Yield Potential

As farmers prepare for the 2025 growing season, Taylor Seed Farms believes it is important to address an often-overlooked aspect of crop production: managing micronutrients in corn. 

Seven micronutrients—iron, manganese, zinc, copper, boron, molybdenum, and chlorine—are essential for optimal plant development and yield potential. Today, we will focus on zinc, manganese and boron, as these are frequently applied foliarly and can also be paired with starter fertilizers. 

Zinc deficiency is one of the most common deficiencies in corn, often visible as white or yellow streaking starting at the base of new leaves. Cool, wet conditions and high-pH soil are the main culprits for this issue.  

Manganese deficiency may show as a pale color in new leaves, and this nutrient is critical for improving stalk quality and disease tolerance.

Boron plays a vital role during tasseling and pollination. While boron deficiency is not easily detectable early on, poor pollination and underdeveloped ears can indicate a boron deficiency. 

In high-yield environments, micronutrient imbalances can limit maximum yield potential. Soil tests and tissue sampling are effective ways to identify deficiencies, but visual signs during the growing season can also serve as indicators. Keep an eye out for these symptoms to ensure your crop achieves its full potential.
